Most of the time, affiliate marketers choose their niche and then they look for affiliate products to promote within that niche. However, you can initiate this process in reverse and it may be especially helpful if you are marketing within a niche that you are not sure has a good supply of affiliate products.
Search for Products Within Your Niche
There are various ways to search for products within your niche. You can type the name of your niche into Google or your favorite search engine along with the word "affiliate" or "affiliate program." Even though you may know in a broad sense the niche in which you intend to market, searching for products may help you to narrow down the niche a bit more. For example, "diets" is far too broad a niche to begin marketing in. While it is a good starting place when you are searching for a niche for your new niche marketing business, you will need to drill down further in order to specialize. If you type in "diet affiliate" into Google, you will be presented with a variety of diet programs, diet pills, and diet supplements.
As you keep researching, you may discover that you want to specialize in just a corner of the diet niche, for example, natural diet supplements, or something like that.
Your Favorite Products
You may have some favorite products that you would like to promote and so you could create a niche around one or more of those products. One niche marketer wanted to promote a product that her daughter used to help keep her grandson safe. She didn't want to start a blog about grandparents even though she enjoyed being one so she researched the product more and came up with a niche marketing idea to promote products that keep both children and adults safe. Because she was impressed with just one product that she used in her personal life, she went on to create a highly successful niche promoting safety products.
Keep up with Current Market Trends
If you see a hot product that is flying off the shelves, you may want to get in on the action and promote that product yourself. The beauty of niche marketing is that once sales of that product have cooled, you will have created an entire niche around that product so that now you can go on to promote other products within that niche instead of just letting your blog or website dry up.
Affiliate Programs
You may have seen an affiliate program that you would like to join, perhaps Amazon or another big name program. While not every affiliate program offers as many product choices as Amazon does, if there is a program you want to be a part of, you can peruse their product offerings and then create a niche around one or more of their products.
While it is better to create niche marketing sites around subjects you have some interest in, you also want to create niches around products that are already selling well. That way, you can concentrate on making sure people find your site instead of having to extol the virtues of your product. Whether you create your niche first and then find the right products to promote or choose a niche around products you have already selected, make sure your niche and your products complement each other so that when site visitors find your site they will already be interested in your products.
